Door Refinishing That Restores the Natural Beauty of Real Wood
There's nothing quite like the warmth and character of a real wood door. The grain patterns, the depth of a hand-rubbed stain, the solid feel when it closes. But Florida's humidity, UV exposure, and temperature swings can turn a beautiful wood door into a cracked, faded, peeling mess in just a few years. N&N Painting restores wood doors to their original beauty across Southwest Florida.
Door refinishing is a fundamentally different process than painting. Instead of covering the wood with an opaque coating, we strip away the old finish to reveal the raw wood underneath, then apply stains and clear coats that bring out the natural grain. It's more labor-intensive than painting, but the results on a quality wood door are worth every extra hour.
Our process starts with careful chemical stripping to remove old varnish, polyurethane, or stain without damaging the wood fibers. We then sand progressively through multiple grits (80, 120, 180, and sometimes 220) to create a uniformly smooth surface that accepts stain evenly. Any repairs to gouges, dents, or checks in the wood happen between sanding passes.
Florida humidity is the biggest enemy of a wood door finish. In communities like Pelican Bay, Bonita Bay, and along the Marco Island waterfront, salt-laden air adds another layer of challenge. We use marine-grade spar urethane and exterior-rated clear coats with UV inhibitors that flex with the wood as it expands and contracts through our wet and dry seasons. These finishes resist cracking, yellowing, and moisture penetration far longer than standard polyurethane.
We refinish front entry doors, interior wood doors, French doors, and custom architectural doors throughout Naples, Fort Myers, Bonita Springs, Estero, and surrounding communities. Many of the grand entrances in SWFL's luxury homes feature oversized mahogany, cypress, or teak doors that deserve expert care. Not a generic handyman with a can of Minwax.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between door refinishing and door painting?
Refinishing preserves and brings out the natural wood grain using stains and clear coats. Painting covers the wood with an opaque color. Refinishing is ideal for quality wood doors where the grain is worth showcasing.
How long does door refinishing take?
A single door typically takes 2-3 days due to stripping, sanding, staining, and multiple clear coat applications with drying time between each.
Can you match the original stain color?
In most cases, yes. We custom-mix stains to match existing woodwork or achieve your desired look. We always do a test area before committing to the full door.
Is refinishing possible on a door that's been painted over?
Usually, yes. We can strip paint from wood doors to expose the grain underneath. However, if the door has been painted many times, there may be residual paint in the grain that affects the final look. We'll assess this during your estimate.
